Interpretation of the Twenty-Eighth Rule of Love
Interpretation of the Twenty-Eighth Rule of Love
Rule Number 28 — The past is an interpretation. The future is on illusion. The world does not move through time as if it were a straight line, proceeding from the past to the future. Instead time moves through and within us, in endless spirals. Eternity does not mean infinite time, but simply timelessness. If you want to experience eternal illumination, put the past and the future out of your mind and remain within the present moment.
– Shams, to Desert Rose
Context - This rule appears when Desert Rose recalls her interactions with Shams and remembers him sharing this insight with her.
Interpretation within the Story - In the story, Desert Rose feels deep shame about her life so far as a harlot. One part of her wants to leave the brothel as soon as possible, while another part is afraid to step into the uncertainty of the future beyond it. This is where the rule becomes meaningful, as it emphasizes the importance of staying in the present moment instead of being trapped between past regret and future fear.
Deeper Interpretation Beyond the Story - The human mind constantly swings between two extremes, much like a pendulum. It either dwells in memories of the past or gets lost in imagined future. At times it relives the past, and at others it becomes anxious about what lies ahead. In this constant movement between the two, it misses the present moment, which is the only true reality.
Neither the past nor the future truly exists. The only reality is this present moment, yet we miss it by living in what is no longer there or what has not yet arrived.
If we are to change our lives, it can only happen through decisions and actions taken in the present moment. However, we often lose this opportunity by being preoccupied with the past or the future.
Time exists only in the past and the future. The present moment is so subtle and fleeting that it almost escapes our awareness. Before we can fully grasp it, it has already passed. In such a subtle moment, one cannot exist in past or future. If the mind is occupied with either, it cannot be present. Each of these fleeting moments is followed by another, creating a continuous flow of timelessness. This continuity of timeless moments is what is referred to as eternity.
This rule also reminds us that all movement in existence is circular rather than linear. From the movement of planets to the rotation of the Earth on its axis, everything moves in a circle. This eternal circular movement is always taking place. Such movement can only be experienced when we are fully present, having set aside both past and future.
In essence, this rule teaches that the only way to connect with existence and awaken to its energy is by living fully in the present moment.
